Once again we were blessed at sunset surf camp with a perfect 18 second 7 ft swell that hit around 205 degrees. These conditions combined with little to no wind made for some epic surf.

In between lessons we drove south about 10 minutes to a place we call the point. It’s the closest surf spot around that can hold up to around 20 ft faces, 10 foot Hawaiian.

Although the waves weren’t 20 ft Adam, Matt, my Dad and I ended paddling out right by the normal boil that everyone sits on and out to the outer point where the waves where lining up perfectly. It was still low tide so there were a few rock heads above water but we managed to dodge them for a perfect surf session.

One wave after another we watched and hooted as we surfed passed each other laughing and enjoying ourselves because we were the only ones in the lineup. What else could you ask for good friends, good waves, beautiful blue water, and a sun burn that lasted days.

We pulled up to Hermosa Beach around 6:30 in the morning with a cool breeze coming off the mountains.

The wind was offshore and the waves were head high perfect for our intermediate lesson.

With sun block on our faces and surfboards under our arms we walked down the beach looking for that perfect peak when we saw three people standing by the high tide mark calling us over to them. We walk over and as we approach we notice that they were releasing from a styrofoam cooler around 30 baby leather back turtles.

What a treat, we watched as these tiny turtles struggled to past the shorebreak. Wave after wave they got rolled up on the beach but they never gave up. We stood motionless in the water until we watched the last determined leather back make it past the shore break.

We gave our thanks for the show strapped on our leashes and then paddled out with the same determination to take on the shore break ourselves. Once out on the outside we actually saw a few of the turtles coming up for air as they dove down and disappeared into the blue.

Finally…after a year of trying we’ve finally managed to find our way on to Tripadvisor.

This may not sound like all that big of a deal for you guys but let me tell you, it was a challenge.

There are many guidelines you have to abide by before consideration in to the directory is given. Simple things. Stuff like hours of operation and daily surf lessons. Who’d have thought?

Well, we are finally in there and that’s what matters most. The frontpage of the site has a Tripadvisor badge to view our Dominical Surf Camp page on Tripadvisor. That being said, we hope that our previous clients who have visited us in the past, might consider being so kind and leaving us a review on the Dominical Surf Camp – Sunset Surf, Tripadvisor page.

Tell you what…if you leave us a review we’ll consider sending you a “to die for” postcard, from Dominical, Costa Rica. How’s that sound? You can brag to all your friends that you got a postcard all the way from sunny Costa Rica. Not to mention Dominical was also ranked #18 in the world’s top 50 beaches by CNN. Don’t believe me? Check it out for yourself. Dominical Costa Rica Ranked #18 out of 50 for the Top Beaches of the World by CNN

Today September 25th fusion juvenile dropped in at our office to video how to give a surf lesson. A team of four youngsters who report on issues locally or events that pertain more to youth. They were full of energy and excited to learn the art of surfing. We taught them ocean safety, ocean awareness, and the famous “pop up”, and out to surf we went. I also had my girlfriend/instructor get in on the video to have some fun.

Anchorman Gabriel popped up and rode his first wave all the way to the sand. He was very surprised due to the fact that he never surfed before. “Another one!” He yelled as he came back out. You should have seen the smile on that kids face as we walked his board out.

While drinking water with the team of reporters on the beach we watched as anchorman stayed out surfing one wave after another. It was a success they learned learned the proper mechanics, now they can build muscle memory with good technique so that they will get to the next level of surfing. Next time they are back in town I promised to get them riding down the face of a wave. Here is the footage that was broadcasted on the local news channel.

Dominical was choppy so we jumped in the Bongo and headed south to Playa Hermosa. As we pulled off the road looking for some shade of a tree to park under we noticed that we were blessed with glassy head high surf. Connor was excited and anxious to get in the water and surf down the face of a wave.

We spotted the rip tide jumped into it and we were pulled outside in no time. Sitting on our boards enjoying the jungle view we see a set stacking on the horizon. Connor spins his board and starts paddling toward the beach. I am paddling along side him putting him in proper position as the wave rolls toward us he jumps to his feet and disappears yelling as he glides down the face of the wave. “YEahhhhhhhh”. Paddles back out and cant believe it “wow, what a rush!”

We ended up surfing for over three hours since the waves were so good. Sun burnt and tired Connor was a happy and proud man charging some big waves his first week on a surf board.

The Park family moved to Costa Rica originally in 1981 to live part time. Dylan, Jonathan and Nathan along with their older sister, Elizabeth, grew up surrounded by Costa Rica’s diverse culture and adventurous lifestyle. Some early memories include deep sea fishing off the Nicoya Peninsula, water skiing over crystal clear reefs, camping on the farm during the weekends and of course, playing endlessly in the ocean.

The family left Costa Rica in 1986 and a couple years later found themselves living in Hawaii for the next 11 years. All three boys graduated from high school on Maui and spent all their free time in the water; first boogie boarding then surfing. Dylan became an avid spear fisherman, Nathan took his love of surfing to the mountains to become a professional snowboard coach and Jonathan, after years as a competitive snowboarder, was drawn back to Maui to start a family and live the Aloha Spirit.

Throughout the years on Maui, going back to Costa Rica and working on the family farm was a shared family vision. Now living full time on the farm and owning his own surf camp, Dylan has made the family dream a reality. All of the Park family divides their time between Costa Rica, Maui and the Rocky Mountains. They truly do bring the Aloha Spirit and the Pura Vida lifestyle together!

When Dylan first decided to do the Dominical surf camp, he knew what he was up against with dozens of options to choose from, how would his Dominical surf camp stand out from the rest?

Simple. Experience and service means happy clients and happy clients means “word of mouth” advertising which then converts to…REFERRALS!

Dylan’s Dominical surfing lessons first had to stand out like a red herring from the rest and he did this by offering a diverse selection of Dominical surf lesson packages that range from the traditional surf lesson all the way to incorporating martial arts and yoga. How? Ask Dylan to find out for yourself.
With his intuitive nature in to future trends in the surf world, Dylan has also designed a Costa Rica Surf travel package with the co-op services of the finest of the Dominical hotels, Domilocos Hotel & Restaurant. Which just so happens to be where you will find the central office of Sunset Surf Dominical.

These Costa Rica Surf Packages include custom tailored surf packages of varying degrees, free time adventure tours to surrounding waterfalls, zip lining and more and of course accommodations at the popular Domilocos hotel.

As the attention on Dominical, Costa Rica continues to rise, so does the demand for tourist activities in the area. With more “out of the box” thinkers like Dylan, we can expect an exhilarating experience we won’t soon forget.
