A friend “facebooked” me and asked if I’d be interested in surfing lessons in Costa Rica . . . . why not? So I booked my ticket and updated my passport not knowing much about where I was going or what it was doing!! We spent our 3rd day in the country traveling south along the Pacific to the quaint, little town of Dominical! I did wonder for a moment what I had gotten myself into? Hotel Domilocos is this charming hotel right off the water. We were instantly greeted by Dylan, (our surf instructor) Nathan and Mary and felt warm and welcomed right away!! Our beginner lessons were informative and informational and very hands-on . . . . pretty much a private lesson! I was excited and nervous and anxious and determined! The first several days were spent learning the board and popping up and riding the wash. But the “big waters” did come later . . . . . and, boy, did they kick my butt!!

The town of Dominical is awesome-totally a surfing village! Lots of great little bars and restaurants! The beach is quiet and relaxing and very tropical! The whole area is gorgeous-something out of a movie! My favorite part was walking the sandy, wet beach every morning-I felt like I was at the edge of the world. Dylan is an awesome instructor and did not give up until I took in the total surfing experience! We loved the horseback-riding and the waterfall was the most amazing thing I’ve seen! The whole package was a dream! I would not hesitate for one second to travel back and experience it all over again!!!

I participated in the 1 week Sunset Surf Camp in October. I was a complete novice to surfing prior to my arrival. I didn’t know what to expect. The experience ended up exceeding all of my expectations. When I landed in San Jose, Dylan was already there waiting to pick me up. After a very scenic ride to Dominical I was taken to the Hotel Domilocos. The accommodations were excellent, and it was only about a 20 second walk to the beach.

The next day, I began my surf lessons. I was very impressed with Dylan’s knowledge of the sport, his knowledge of the local beaches, and the quality equipment that he uses. Dylan took the time to create a week long lesson plan that was tailored to my level of experience. With Dylan’s instruction, I was able to ride waves during my very first lesson. After each lesson, I was able to see a noticeable improvement in my surfing ability and confidence. By the end of the week, I was able to successfully ride the vast majority of the waves I attempted to catch. That was truly an amazing feeling. I had a great time, and was sad to see my vacation end. Sunset Surf Camp is a family owned and operated business, and by the time I left, I was made to feel like part of the family. I would recommend the surf camp to anyone who wants to learn how to surf. I look forward to my next trip to Costa Rica, and my next surf camp experience with Sunset Surf.
